Cartoon Network, I'm talking about fansubbed stuff. They are releasing it
within 24 hours of when it airs overseas. :D You can also download the
manga. I've been watching it since before Cartoon Network knew it existed
and I can tell you it's the best anime I've seen in a long time.

entire thrust of it is the characters who are constantly involved in
'combat', which is demonstrated as standing around and talking with the
odd pause to throw something or perform some variety of 'ninja'

*GET* Cartoon Network, I'm talking about fansubbed stuff. They are

Actually, 'NO fighting going on' describes the fight scenes I
encountered pretty well. Of course, I'm not claiming to be an expert on
the show. It could just be that every instance I've seen of Naruto has
happened to fall into a specific (and wildly pedantic) mold which is
not indicative of the rest of the series. I'd say that I would
re-evaluate to see if my first impressions were correct, but the series
just doesn't seem very interesting to me, and I have a huge backlog of
stuff awaiting my attention already.

Excellent! That advice fits into my previous plans to never bother
with Naruto quite nicely. :p 99% of manga series don't seem like
anything I'd care for, and Naruto is in that bunch. Only curently
running books I'm snatching up are Sgt Frog, Suikoden III, and Ranma
1/2 (it's taken them a bit over ten years, but we're getting toward the
end on that one, now). Casually reading Genshiken and Sakura Taisen as
well, but not actively seeking them out. I'm quite particular in my
tastes.
